Our latest Best New Track comes from mysterious Toronto act the Weeknd, who are apparently part of the slightly-less-enigmatic multimedia collective XO. On “What You Need”, they offer “twinkling, moonlit R&B” that finds the common space between Burial and Aaliyah. Read Larry Fitzmaurice’s write-up here.
Too many jams today.

A Fuck Yeah Pop-Punk exclusive interview with DEAD RINGER!
For those that have never heard Dead Ringer, they are an amazing up and coming female fronted pop punk band who, unlike other female fronted bands, who will not be named they play actual pop punk.
Kevin Spann Fuck Yeah Pop Punk - First off all why don’t you introduce us to yourself and the rest of your bandmates.
Kristia Moya Dead Ringer - Dead Ringer is: Kristia Moya on vocals and guitar, Carlos Rivero on bass and backup vocals, and Luis Luna on drums.
FYPP - How did the band first come together?
Kristia Dead Ringer- Carlos and I formed Dead Ringer back in October of 2010. We wanted to write songs that were fun to play while portraying our love for Punk Rock. Though, we started off with no drummer that wasn’t going to stop us from recording our 3 song demo. We were lucky enough to have Kevin Carafa, who had recorded us and filled in on our first two shows, play drums on the recordings. After we recorded the demo, we promoted it as much as we could in hopes that a drummer would be interested in joining the band. And thanks to the internet, Luis Luna came across the band and contacted us. We had tried him out and that was it! We completed our brown trio.
FYPP - Where did the band’s name come from?
Kristia DR - As cliché as it sounds, I was looking up idioms and “dead ringer” was appealing to me and because of that, it stuck with us.
FYPP- So, you have a fat cat logo… why?
Kristia DR - Why not? I love cats and Google is the best thing ever. Google “cat” and the original picture of the fat cat will show up under images.
FYPP - Tell us a little bit about your guys’ debut demo that just recently came out.
Kristia DR- Kevin Carafa recorded our demo at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey. Kevin is a friend of ours so it was a fun experience to work with him on the songs and in the studio. We had recorded the demo in one session and it was a long, but successful night. We’re excited to be working with him again for our EP.
FYPP - How would you describe the band’s sound to someone that has never heard you before?
Kristia DR-Think of the 90’s: You know when Epitaph was all about melodic punk and punk rock. Then there’s Fat Wreck Chords, which all of us can say that we are still HUGE fans of and they are still releasing some of the best punk rock albums of our generation. If you have followed the bands on both labels and still are, then you’ll surely be into Dead Ringer.
FYPP- Who are some of the bands biggest influences?
Kristia DR- Bands off of Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph Records, No Idea Records, Asian Man Records, and etc. We’re in2it.
FYPP - What I really like about you guys is that there aren’t a lot of female fronted bands that I would legitimately classify as punk or pop punk. Did you guys consciously go for this when you were writing or did it just come naturally?
Kristia DR- I’m glad that YOU get it. It came naturally to us. I’ve been a singer/songwriter for years now and it was only a matter of finding people that I can be truly be comfortable with when it came to writing and of course have fun while doing it. I’ve been playing music with Carlos for about 3 years now and I’m glad to still have him by my side as a band mate and one of my best friends which makes this even a better experience.
FYPP- If I’m not mistaken you recently appeared on Just A Quiet Evening Compilation 2011 singing a Lifetime song. How did you get on the compilation, and what made you choose this song? (Great compilation by the way, it also features FYPP’s own Devin covering Four Year Strong’s Find My Way Back)
Kristia DR-Yes! Mike Shaka O’Keeffe had contacted me after viewing my cover of Lifetime’s song on youtube. I record myself playing my favorite songs on acoustic and you can view them here: http://www.youtube.com/breakfree ”Young, Loud, and Scotty” is my favorite Lifetime song and is my favorite to play out of all the covers I do.
FYPP - Amazing covers! I hope everyone checks them out. Personally, when I’m at a show I can’t stand to see a still unresponsive crowd. So what do you prefer to see in the audience while you’re up on stage?
Kristia DR - I cannot agree more with you. We’re all about having a good time and we like to do that on stage. We only hope that the audience in the crowd is like that as well. If not, they should stay home where they belong.
FYPP - What can we expect from Dead Ringer over the next year?
Kristia DR- We’ll be releasing our EP “Enjoy The Ride” through Gruff Beard Records sometime in April. Also, we have a handful of shows in April which you can view on our Facebook and Tumblr. Other than that, we plan on playing as many shows as we can to promote the release of the EP. We’ll be going out on tour in August, in which we will cover the East Coast and some of the Midwest. We’re looking forward to it and are excited for the future of Dead Ringer.
Thanks for the interview, Kristia! If you haven’t checked out Dead Ringer, you need to do so right now. I posted a link to their bandcamp the other day, but if you missed it, go check it out and download their demo for FREE. This band rules.
